Govt to compensate squall victims
SHILLONG: The State government will compensate those 197 families which were affected by Tuesday’s thunder squall even as relief efforts continued on Wednesday.
“Compensation will be paid to the victims,” informed PS Dkhar, Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills, here on Wednesday.
Stating that the amount of compensation will vary as it depended on the extent of damage, he said, “Compensation amount will be fixed on the basis of the assessment report to be provided by the Block Development Officer (BDO).”
Dkhar, who is also the Chairman of District Disaster Management Authority, East Khasi Hills, met the Incident Response Team on Wednesday to review and supervise the response activities.
He directed the officers concerned to provide medical aid, food, shelter and drinking water on priority basis and has requested BDOs concern to coordinate the relief activities on a real time basis and to take prompt actions.
Meanwhile, Additional District Magistrate I Majaw told reporters that teams have been dispatched to distribute dry ration to the people and the District Administration co-ordinate with the local traditional heads.
The worst affected areas are Mawlynrei, Umpling, Nongmynsong as well as parts of Pynthor and Nongpathaw.
The total number of families affected was 197.
On being asked if the people are taking shelter in the makeshift places, he said that the affected families were provided tarpaulin to arrange temporary shelters.
Parts of the city were in shambles on Tuesday when thunder squall, with a wind speed of 60 kmph wrecked havoc in certain areas of Nongmynsong, Umpling, Pynthorbah and Nongpathaw. At least 12 people, including children, were injured in the nature’s fury.
