SHILLONG: Chairman of Board of Governors, IIM Kolkata and member of the Board of Governors NITTR, Kolkata, Ajit Balakhrishnan has underlined the need of framing the curricula that aligns with the needs and opportunities of the times so as to help in better employability of the students.
Speaking at the 2nd Regional Workshop on ‘Improving Quality of Technical Education System in the North Eastern States’ organised by the National Institute of Technical Teachers Training and Research Institute, Kolkata (NITTTR) and hosted by the Education Department, Government of Meghalaya got underway at Shillong Polytechnic, Mawlai here on Friday, he also stressed on the need for setting up a placement system that would enhance the employability of students.
Balakhrishnan urged upon the participants to encourage creativity and innovation in the young minds of students.
While spelling out the objectives of the workshop, Prof. S.K. Naskar, Associate Professor NITTR Kolkata, stated that the workshop would centre on its main theme “Aligning Polytechnic Curricula towards Employability” and expressed hope that it would help provide a platform for the participating officials from different states for all round development of students in the realm of technical education.
Representing the Education department, Meghalaya, O. Ropmay, Joint Director Higher & Technical Education, Meghalaya said that the workshop is a welcome move by NITTR Kolkata, adding that the primary focus of all concerned must be on curriculum-planning with special focus to the employability factor for students.
The two-day workshop which concluded on Saturday aimed to provide a platform for State Directors, Polytechnic Principals and others to reflect upon and discuss threadbare various issues afflicting implementation of important Technical Education Projects, all round quality improvement in the Teaching Learning System, aligning Technical education Curriculum along with the needs of the world of work and other related issues.
The workshop deliberated on issues pertaining to the curriculum of all the polytechnics of the region, so as to align it towards greater employability of the diploma students.
The workshop was attended by the directors of the different DTE’s of all the north eastern states, including the Principals of all the Polytechnics in the region, the AICTE and other dignitaries.
The curriculum design on soft skills as a subject was impressed upon with a lot of emphasis on modernity and revision of the syllabus, to cater to the growing demands of the economy and society of the modern world.
