SHILLONG: Enrolment for National Population Register (NPR) will begin soon in Shillong.
Informing this here on Monday, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner P.S. Dkhar said the enrolment process is more or less over in rural areas of the district after which the enrolment will begin in the State capital.
Dkhar cited paucity of technicians as the reason behind the district administration’s inability to go on with the enrolment process simultaneously in urban and rural areas.
“We have 10 teams who go to the villages for enrolment and once we finish the rural areas, we will start the enrolment in Shillong probably by May or June,” Dkhar added, while making it clear that there has been n objection from anyone to the ongoing enrolment process.
Earlier, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had stressed on the need to conduct an aggressive campaign on the implementation of the National Population Register (NPR) in Meghalaya besides asking the respective district administrations to prepare calendar well in advance to create sensitization among the people about the objectives of NPR.
It is said that NPR will be of great advantage for Meghalaya where there is a concern for illegal immigration and doubtful citizens since NPR provides the data of citizens which can be used to categorize people.
As per official statements, only 8,59,690 persons have been enrolled under the NPR in the State and the total biometric enrolment including central paramilitary forces and defence personnel in the State is 1,12,885.
