International Day for Street Children observed in city

SHILLONG: The Reach Shillong Ministries observed the International Street Children’s Day here on Tuesday.
During the function, the children from the streets of Shillong participated in different activities specially arranged for them. The programme was supported by the Department of Social Welfare and RMD Singhania Charitable Trust.
The event was inaugurated by Chairperson, State Commission for the Protection of Child Rights, Meena Kharkongor at the KJP Assembly Conference Centre.
Songs, prayers, apart from dances marked the occasion.
Kharkongor in her address encouraged the street children and called upon all to pursue education at whatever cost.
Abhishek Singhania of the RMD Singhania Charitable Trust thanked the Reach Shillong Ministries for the social work and service rendered to the most underprivileged of the society.
The programme was attended by representative from the church, the Social Welfare Department, Police Department, Childline and members of the public.
The highlight of the celebration was the bike rally held with the active participation from the Meghalaya xBHP, Freaky Bikerz and Helping Hands.
The children’s joy knew no bounds as they carried out pillion ride on these bikes covering the familiar streets of Shillong where they used to roam around.
The Freaky Bikerz further entertained the children with stunt performance at Don Bosco Technical School grounds to the loud cheers of the kids and joy of the students from the St Anthony’s School and the Don Bosco Institute.
Arch Bishop Dominic  Jala and other priests also graced the occasion.
The children representing the different open day shelters run by the Reach Shillong Ministries presented special items during the concert hekd as part of the event.
There were also songs from Lamphrang Syiemlieh, magic show by Levis Lyngkhoi, dance from children, skit from the field working students of MLCU, BDPS and Bosco Institute, Jorhat.
