Union Min urges state to pursue ‘organic mission’

SHILLONG:  Union Minister of Agriculture, Radha Mohan Singh has urged the State Government to effectively and efficiently implement the mission of the Union Government to make Meghalaya an organic state.
Interacting with media persons from New Delhi through video conferencing, Singh pointed out that people in Meghalaya are already practicing organic farming in large scale.
Stating that several villages near Umiam are successfully practicing organic farming, he also praised the Meghalaya Government for giving all support to farmers for the initiative.
“Both the Meghalaya Government and the Centre are keen to make Meghalaya an organic state like Sikkim,” he said.
It may be mentioned that the total organic production in the country is 1.24 million tonnes, while total area under organic farming is 0.723 million hectare.
It may be mentioned that Sikkim is the only ‘organic state’ in the country which implemented organic practices on around 75,000 hectares of agricultural land.
