SHILLONG: A house at Mawlai Nongpdeng Block ‘C’ was crushed after a large tree fell on it in the early morning hours on Tuesday following strong winds.
The freak accident that happened at 4:30 AM made the occupants – a wife, husband and 10 children – believe that an earthquake had occurred only to realize that a tree had come crushing down. However, there were no causalities.
The house belongs to Sistina Marwein.
The same morning, two houses at Mawsiatkhnam were blown away by strong winds.
While the occupants were fast asleep, strong winds wrecked havoc and blew away the roof tops and these houses belongs to Lita Warbah. The other house belonged to Sylvia Nengnong where eight children lived with other family members.
Local MLA P.T. Sawkmie visited the affected families on the same day and handed over financial assistance to them. He said that he will approach the East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner and the BDO of Mylliem Block for immediate relief to the families.
