SHILLONG: The installation of CCTV cameras has led to detection of as many as 188 cases of crime in Shillong city alone. Officials informed that the 188 cases include instances of drunken brawls, trouble making, wrong parking etc.
In addition, another 100 such cases have been reported from Tura town where the CCTV cameras have been installed.
Buoyed by this, the Meghalaya Police has already started the process of installing more cameras under the second phase of the Safe and Secure Shillong project.
Officials said that the police headquarters has asked the respective SPs to conduct survey and identify locations in their respective districts to put more cameras and areas like Nongpoh, Jowai, Nongstoin, Baghmara, Ampati and Williamngar will also be covered under the initiative.
It has been learnt that the SPs of Shillong and Tura have asked for 30 and 15 more additional cameras respectively, whereas the Williamnagar SP has requested for 15 CCTV cameras.
Reacting to a query, the official informed that the implementing agency of the Union Government left an entire team of engineers in Shillong to ensure that the cameras function 24/7 without any hitch.
The project is being implemented by the North East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR).
Under phase 2, CCTV cameras would be installed in 30 more locations in Shillong and another 15 locations in Tura depending on funds.
The State Police has been laying more emphasis on installation of CCTV cameras after miscreants set on fire two people in the city during the ILP agitations that rocked the State in 2013.
