Conrad to file nominations on April 27

SHILLONG: NPP candidate Conrad Sangma who will be filing his nomination papers on the same day with his opponent Congress candidate Dikkanchi D Shira on April 27, is hopeful that the BJP and GNC will support his candidature.
The by-poll to Tura Lok Sabha seat, which was necessitated following the sudden demise of sitting MP PA Sangma, will be held on May 16, and the last date for filing nominations is April 29.
While the Garo Hills unit of BJP wanted to contest the Tura seat, the Central leaders of  the party are not keen in putting up any candidate as NPP is a partner in the NDA-led by BJP.
The BJP will announce its decision in a day or two, a party leader said.
Another concern for NPP is the move on the part of GNC which is part of NPP led Garo Hills Progressive Alliance in GHADC to contest the seat.
When contacted, Conrad said that NPP had held discussions with both BJP and GNC in the past and even a general appeal was made urging various political parties not to put up any candidate as a mark of respect to the departed leader.
While NPP will be banking on sympathy recalling the contribution of its architect Purno, the Congress will highlight its achievements in the state during the campaign.
