SHILLONG: As many as 93 liquor stores in East Khasi Hills out of a total of 106 have been locked following the notification of the State government to stop setting up of liquor shops within 200 metres of religious places, educational institutions and hospitals.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner P.S. Dkhar on Wednesday informed that only 13 liquor stores were operating in the district out of a total of 106 stores.
“The stores which are open can continue as long as they don’t violate the 200-metre limit prescribed by the State government,” he said.
It may be mentioned that the 93 liquor stores were locked by additional district magistrates after measuring the exact distance between the liquor stores and the nearest religious place, educational institution and hospital.
With most of the liquor stores in and around Shillong being locked in view of the notification of the State government, the wine dealers have been asking the State government to implement the rule only for those shops which were set up after the notification was issued.
