SHILLONG: The residents of Mawphlang under the leadership of the Seng Samla Mawphlang came out in large numbers on Thursday demanding adequate and clean water supply in the area.
The residents also marched towards the PHE office blaming it for supplying water unfit for human consumption. The residents also threatened to disrupt the construction of phase 3 project of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme if the department does not work out the problems.
Meanwhile, concerned over the matter, former legislator P M Syiem cautioned the PHE department for violating the constitutional right under Article 21 and violation of UN Conference Resolution 1977 where “all people whatever their stage of development and their social and economic condition have the right to have access to drinking water in quantum and of equal quality to their basic needs”.
Syiem also expressed concern over the apathy of the department.
