Editor,

We all are aware that Mr. J.J.M Nichols Roy or James Joy Mohon Nichols Roy or as he is lovingly called Bah Joy by many, was one of the architects of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution which resulted in the establishment of the Autonomous District Councils with the objective of safeguarding the land, its resources, the culture and tradition of the small populated indigenous people living in this region. Apropos the headline above I would like to share the following information, especially with the younger generation of our society. J.J. Mohon Roy (Bah Joy) was born on the 12th June, 1884. His father was Khajendra Mohon Roy (spelt Roi in those days) and his mother was Rimai Syiemlieh who was also the sister of u Tirot Sing Syiem. Bah Joy’s wife, Nora Evelyn Nichols was born on 27th April, 1879 at Idaho, USA. They were married on the 17th August, 1907 and after marriage they were known as James Joy Mohon Nichols Roy and Nora Evelyn Nichols Roy. Their son Stanley Nichols Roy who was also the ex. MLA and Minister of Meghalaya took his title from his father. The grandson of Bah J.J.M. Nichols Roy i.e. the son of Bah Stanley Nichols Roy, who is married to a Khasi lady, also adopted the patrilineal system and so too their children as told to me by their close relative. The bust of J.J.M. Nichols Roy is today installed in front of the office of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, Shillong as an honour to him who many consider as the’ father’ of the District Councils.

Hima Mylliem affairs

Editor, Apropos the letter by Pransant K Jain on the Mylliem Syiemship (ST, May 5,2016), I agree completely agree with his views that the Hima Mylliem is apolitical and a traditional body. The recent ouster of the Syiem of Mylliem is highly commendable. We, the common people who have faced many problems in the Hima office at the hands of a few of the Syiem’s ‘trusted’ Myntris, welcome this move with open arms. It cannot be denied that the Hima Mylliem under the suspended Syiem was blackmarked to a large extend. The sanctity of the Hima is lost. We hope this present Acting Syiem will deliver his promises and be the just chief that he is supposed to be.

A beautiful moment from the beautiful game

Editor,

A momentous occasion has just taken place in the footballing world. Leicester City an unfancied team from the East Midlands of England has just won the top prize in English football, a feat they have never achieved in their entire footballing history. A hardcore Tottenham Hotspur supporter I was hugely disappointed that they did not win the league this year but the consoling factor for me is that I was named after a football legend who started his footballing career with Leicester city and who ended his career in English football with Tottenham Hotspur. That player was part of a consortium that rescued Leicester City from financial mire in 2002.Leaving aside personal affiliations, the fact that a team who were battling for survival last season managed to become champions the next season with almost the same set of players and circumstances is nothing short of extraordinary and it should give lots of encouragement to each one of us to never give up on something we believe in even if the odds are stacked against us.Most of the top footballing clubs spent huge sums of money to acquire the service of high rated players. For e.g last year’s champions Chelsea spent almost 32 million dollars to acquire the service of Diego Costa. Leicester city top player and PFA player of the year, Riyad Mahrez on the other hand cost less than 400000 dollars. For a change money power has taken a backseat and Leicester City has won one of football’s most prestigious league through dint of sheer hard work, grit, determination, and talent. They have shown to the world through the beautiful game the unflinching resolve of the human spirit to beat the odds and that dreams can actually come true!

Repeated power cuts in Jowai

Editor,

The repeated power cuts in Jowai town is very annoying. This power cut is a common feature but for the last one month it has happened several times in a day. Hence people are uncomfortable not only at night but it also affects the normal life Letters to the Editor must have the full name, address and contact number of the writer, even if they are sent by email. Only letters with the requisite details will be published. of people during the day. Small cottage industries are affected; mobile phones which are compulsory for each and every individual today cannot be charged. When contacted the authority concerned too are at a loss. When the weather gets windy and stormy and there is thunder and lightning it is natural to have irregular supply of power. But now power cuts occur even during fair weather. When this kind of load shedding is necessary the MeECL should inform the public through the media. I appeal to the authorities concerned to look in to the matter so that the monthly electricity bill paid per every month tallies with the power supplies. It may be mentioned that whenever there is delay in payment of electricity bills one has to pay a penalty amount. Should the amounts not be deducted for irregular supply of power?

Yours etc.,
