SHILLONG: Members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Langpih area met Home Minister Roshan Warjri to seek her intervention for immediate eviction of all illegal Nepali settlers who have encroached in the area since 2011.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, the KSU observed that the status quo agreement between Assam and Meghalaya stipulates that no illegal settlers are allowed at Langpih, however, over 200 families have settled since 2011 and more are arriving each day.
“There is continued harassment of the indigenous people whose farmlands are damaged and livestock are killed,” said John Nongsiang, president of KSU South West Khasi Hills unit.
The KSU informed that the Home minister has assured that their demand for setting up of a police station in the area would be taken up with the chief secretary.
It was further informed that the chief secretaries of both states will convene a meeting after the declaration of results of the Assam elections, to deliberate on the issue.
The KSU has urged the State government to take steps to curb the menace of illegal migration.
