More arms deposited in SWGH
AMPATI: More arms have been deposited by licensed arms holders of South West Garo Hills in the run-up to the Tura by-election, bringing the total number of arms deposited till date to 85 as per the report of the district police.
Continuing with the preventive law and order action to ensure peaceful elections in the district, Ampati police has so far bound down 23 potential troublemakers and criminals. It has also executed non-bailable warrants to three persons, in addition to eight pending cases.
Flying squads and static surveillance teams continue checking to prevent violation of model code of conduct in the run up the elections.

Coal trucks seized in WJH
JOWAI: The Superintendent of Police, West Jaintia Hills, on Saturday seized three coal laden trucks for overloading and transportation of coal without valid documents.
The police chief was on his way to Jowai when he witnessed three trucks trying to avoid the 7-mile weigh bridge and diverting through Pasyih Nangbah Road.
The SP detained all three trucks and a case was registered against the truck owners. The drivers – D. Lamare, A. Dkhar and Riman Synnah – were arrested.

Office bearers elected
SHILLONG: The general body meeting of Sree Narayana Guru Cultural Centre, Shillong, a socio-cultural organization, held on May 7, has elected new office bearers for the year 2016-18. M.K. Mohanan and Simon Joseph continue in their positions as president and vice-president, respectively, while Belbora Wankhar was elected general secretary, besides other office bearers.

Rape attempt on minor in city
SHILLONG: On May 8 around 11 AM, one Manoj Bhardwaj (26) allegedly attempted to rape one sixteen year old girl in his residence at Motinagar, Shillong. Matter is under inquiry.

SIMs used by militants, criminals
SHILLONG: In an indication that militants still use illegal SIM card in Garo Hills, five SIM cards have been   found to have been used by militants and other criminals.
Mondeep Sarkar, Manager, Legal & Regulatory, M/s Airtel Telecommunication North East Service Area, lodged a complaint that five SIM cards acquired through fake documents were found to have been used by militants and criminals between 2012 and December, 2015.

‘Put Maweit under Nongstoin Block’
NONGSTOIN: Following the announcement of the State government that Mawshynrut Administrative Unit will be upgraded to a civil sub-division, residents of Maweit area, led by the FKJGP, have demanded their exclusion from Mawshynrut C&RD Block.
The FKJGP said the people of Maweit area demand inclusion of Maweit area under Nongstoin C&RD Block of West Khasi Hills for the betterment of the public.
The FKJGP said Nongstoin was only 35 kms away from Maweit whereas Mawshynrut was almost 80 kms away.
Residents of Maweit depend on Nongstoin for official work, transportation, marketing and schooling, the organisation added.
