TURA: NPP candidate Conrad K. Sangma’s election campaign took him to Rongara in South Garo Hills on Friday morning where he was greeted by a large gathering of his supporters from Rongara and its surrounding areas.
Sangma was accompanied by GHADC CEM Denang T. Sangma, NPP MDC from Wagesik, Sengnal Sangma, BJP leader Jentilla R. Marak and UDP leader Mahamsingh Marak, among others.
During his campaign, Conrad urged the people to be wary of the Congress party’s tactics to woo the voters by making allegations against the BJP. He urged the voters not to be taken in by money power and to cast their votes for the right candidate.
“There are only two candidates in this by-election. It is up to you to decide who you think can go to Delhi and raise their voice for the welfare of the A’chik people,” he said.
He reminded that P.A. Sangma who had always stood for the wellbeing of the A’chik people was no more which was why the by-election was an important one. He asked the people to choose who they think could raise the voice of the A’chik people in Parliament.
Reacting to Congress MLA Cherak W Momin’s allegation that he (Conrad) had misused Rs.350 crore from the MGNREGS scheme, Conrad said he was neither an MLA nor an MDC, not even a BDO or a Gram Sevak to have access to the fund.
Conrad hit out at the Congress government for failing to disburse the post matric scholarship of students and the old age pension both of which have been pending for over two years. He also recalled the recent termination of the 225 forest guards who are now struggling to make ends meet in their families.
Meanwhile, Conrad informed that it was the intention of the NDA government to construct a proper road from Maheshkhola to Baghmara. He urged the people to vote sensibly and assured that he would fulfill the unfulfilled promises of his father if he was elected.
The campaign also held meetings at Baghmara Market, Sibbari, Gasuapara and Dimapara on the way back to Tura on the same day.
Dikkanchi in Kharkutta
Meanwhile, Congress MLA and party candidate for the Tura by-election, Dikkanchi D. Shira, addressed a series of meetings in Kharkutta constituency in North Garo Hills on Friday, calling upon the electorate to support and vote for Congress so that she can be the ‘bridge to development’.
Among others who addressed the meetings included MLA Cherak W. Momin, who stated that all over Garo Hills there was tremendous support for the Congress candidate who is also a sitting MLA from Mendipathar.
MPCC vice-president John F. Kharshiing, in his speech, stated that the improved law and order situation in Garo Hills was an indicator that development is finally happening on the ground. He stated that one could feel the sense of security and normalcy returning in Garo Hills due to the effective policies of the Congress led government including providing the much needed stability. The meeting was also attended and addressed by large number of people and party officials.
