Heavy landslides in Dima Hasao in Assam

Haflong (Assam): Heavy rains in Dima Hasao has effected normal life in the hill district of Assam causing landslides at several places, including its headquarters in Haflong, official sources said.
Due to incessant rain and landslips since yesterday, Haflong was completely cut off via land and train services were cancelled between several places.
The district administration on Tuesday declared all private and government educational institutions to be closed and alerted people not to travel during night time. Meanwhile, a minor girl student was drowned in Mahur river while she was going to school and accidentally fell into the river, sources said adding, in another incident two person were injured at places 7 Kilo and 8 Kilo when their houses collapsed.
The main road connecting Haflong was hit in several areas leading to transitory blockade on D D Raod, NH 54 and between Haflong-Lumding and Haflong-Silchar road, sources said. Heavy landslips occurred in Haflong area of Phiangpui, Muolhoi Digrik, Debarai, Nutan Basti, Mahadev tilla-New Haflong railway station approach road, Jatinga, Synod turning, Tankaram turning and in Lungkhok interrupting commuters.
Landslides also occurred at Nutan Leikul, Mahur and Maibong in Haflong-Lumding road, they said. Rain and strong winds damaged nineteen houses at Arada and fourteen houses at Phelegphu village Monday night.
The N F Railway authority has cancelled all trains running in the hills section between Silchar-Lumding due to landslides at several places and damage of tracks between New Haflong-Migrendisa Mahur and Phaiding and in the diversion section between Jatinga-Lampu, Bandarkhal-Ditekchera and Harangajao.
Railway sources said train service will be restored only after the tracks are repaired, which might take several hours to days depending on weather condition and the difficult terrain. A help line was also opened by the district administration. (PTI)
