SHILLONG:  A lower court on Thursday acquitted the jailed GNLA ‘chairman’ Champion Sangma from all charges in connection with a criminal case in which  he was accused of assaulting an employee inside Shillong jail in October 2014.
Informing this, the counsel of Champion Sangma, Sujit Dey  said that the prosecution  has failed to establish the charges levelled by UK Kyndiah, the then jailor of the Shillong District jail.
“It is clear that the FIR was filed against Champion with a malafide intention,” he said.
According to Dey, the FIR filed  by Champion against jail authorities has not been forwarded till date despite the High Court’s order.
He said that now the GNLA chief would file a case against Kyndiah .
Champion was accused of hitting jail employee K. Khongwir with an iron rod on October 16, 2014. He has been in jail after he was arrested by Meghalaya police following his handing over by Bangladesh authorities on July 30, 2012.
Last month, Meghalaya High Court had asked the lower court to speed up the trial and complete it within a month.
