SHILLONG: Construction work for the Polo market complex is progressing as per schedule and is expected to be finished by December, 2017.
Informing this here after a review meeting on Monday, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said the design of the structure had to be redrawn since some issues cropped up during excavation.
According to Lyngdoh, the new plan will include an over ground parking lot.
In addition, the State government would take up the project of constructing embankments along the Wahumkhrah to prevent flooding during heavy rains.
The National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) is the implementing agency for the Polo market complex project for which the Union Ministry of Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation has earmarked Rs.23 crores.
Reacting to a query, the Minister informed that a ‘Times Square’ like structure would come up in the second and third phase of the project.
The department will give preference to those shopkeepers who had been evicted from the old Polo market, she added.
