Assam Accord implementation remains Sonowal govt’s top priority

Guwahati: The new BJP-led government in Assam headed by chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has pledged to implement the Assam Accord in letter and spirit besides giving utmost importance in ensuring security to life and property as well protection of identity of citizens.
Addressing the first session of the 14th Assam Assembly, Governor P B Acharya stated that the government would to ensure constitutional, legislative, social and cultural safeguards to all genuine citizens as per Clause 6 of Assam Accord that is basically focused on detection and deportation of illegal migrants coming from Bangladesh into the state after March 25, 1971.
He said the government would works towards facilitating sealing of India-Bangladesh border within a definite timeframe while remaining focused on protecting religious and cultural institutions and ecologically sensitive land/ government land from the onslaught of illegal migrants (infiltrators) as per provisions of the law.
The government has committed to complete the on-going process of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) by scrutinizing credentials of all suspected residents so that it became easier to detect illegal migrants residing in the state.
In respect of tackling the three decades old insurgency problem, the new government will identify vulnerable zones and strengthen the infrastructure of state police force.
More police stations and outposts will be set up while at least one model police station will be set up in each of the districts within the next three years.
All the police stations will be equipped with an all-women cell in phased manner within the next five years.
The infrastructure and training facilities in the state’s only police training college will be upgraded gradually beginning this financial year.
