Party to bring resolution in House if elected to power
SHILLONG: The Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) has asserted that the party would bring a resolution on separate states for Garos and Khasis in the Assembly if the party were to come to power any time in the future.
HSPDP member and legislator from Mawshynrut, Witting Mawsor, said the stand of the party is very clear on a separate state for the Khasis even as he added that the party has been raising the issue since 1968.
Lamenting that respective State governments have not done much about the issue, he said that the incumbent MUA-II government has not even brought a resolution in the Assembly on the issue.
“Since we are not in power we cannot do much but if we come to power we will definitely bring a resolution in the Assembly and raise the matter with the Central government,” he said.
He stated that there will be lot of employment opportunities besides other benefits if the State were to be bifurcated.
On Thursday, United Democratic Party (UDP) working president Jemino Mawthoh had called for a referendum on the issue of separate states for Khasis and Garos so that people should have the power to decide whether both the communities want to remain together or be separated.
The newly elected MP from Tura Conrad Sangma had also endorsed his father and former Lok Sabha Speaker (L) Purno A. Sangma’s call for smaller states saying it will bring administration and development closer to the people.
