SHILLONG: The State Government is once again mooting the idea of introducing “call taxi” services similar to Meru and Ola cabs in the city.
Officials informed that former Principal Secretary, Urban Affairs had proposed the idea of intorducing call taxis in the city but post his retirement not much has been done to realise the same.
However, the Government is now keen to explore the possibilities of starting the initiative and the matter will be discussed in the department, officials said.
Currently, Shillongites are dependent on local cabbies, government-run buses and maxi cabs for their transportaton. However, the existing scheme of things does not offer a door-to-door service to the residents.
Under the proposed taxi service, anyone who needs to hire a cab will have to call a number and the taxi will reach the doorstep of the customer concerned.
Though the idea is unique to Shillong, such services are being operated successfully in bigger cities including Guwahati.
