SHILLONG: The State Child Protection Society under the Integrated Child Development Scheme of the Social Welfare Department organised an awareness programme on social networking and cyber crime for higher secondary and college students of the city at the U Soso Tham auditorium here on Friday.
Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion, Director, Social Welfare, HM Shangpliang, said that at a time when the internet is unavoidable owing to the multitude of benefits and information it has on offer, it is a must to take caution against the evils this computer networking system brings along with it.
“It is pertinent for the students to be alert and aware of the various issues and evils prevalent in the society,” he said.
“Children enter the “no entry” area or the danger zone after getting access from their android phones,” he observed even as he urged the youngsters not to misuse the internet but to keep in mind certain parameters while using it.
He said that the internet/social networking should not be operated as a channel for inciting violence, indecency etc.
Meanwhile, during the programme, students from various schools and colleges were taken through sessions on “Child rights and role of Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child rights”, “Cyber crime and safety awareness”, “Cyber crime related to children, detection of hidden cameras, two way mirrors and some safety tips”, “Social networking”, “debit card fraud”, etc., by various resource persons.
