SHILLONG: Concerned over the rise in riding of two-wheelers by minors, the Shillong Traffic Police conducted a special drive this week to check the practice.
During the drive, 261 cases of traffic violations were detected including 19 cases of underage riding. In another 17 cases, the riders with learner license were found driving without a person with a valid license accompanying them.
In case of underage riding, the parents and guardians were summoned to the police station and fined accordingly. A total of Rs 89,500 was realized as fine in addition to the regular penalties imposed for other traffic violations.
East Khasi Hills SP, M Kharkrang informed that owners of vehicles who allow minors to drive are liable to be booked under section 180 of Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 which includes imprisonment for a term which may extend up to three months or with a fine which may extend to Rs 1000 or both.
