Dimapur: After all eight Congress legislators of Nagaland Legislative Assembly joined the ruling Naga Peoples Front (NPF) and AICC appointed K Therie as the new president of Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee, a section of disappointed senior Congress leaders on Tuesday launched a new regional political party christened as ‘Nagaland Congress’ (NC), a regional party, here.
The disappointed state Congress members, launched Nagaland Congress in Dimapur which mostly comprises of former Congress ministers and legislators, who hold office during the late 90’s during the Congress regime in Nagaland. The NC will soon approach the Election Commission of India for registration of the political party with the symbol “Morung,” the traditional Naga dormitory House.
Nillo Rengma, former minister of school education was unanimously elected as the president of the NC, while Joshua Sumi, a former deputy speaker was elected as the working president. Prasielie Pienyu, Dako Phom and Khusatho were elected as the vice presidents. Supongmeren, former MLA, Vaprumu Demo, GK Rengma and Dr Roland Lotha, were elected the general secretaries, while Z Lohe, former Assembly speaker was nominated as the treasurer.
Speaking at the launch, Rengma said the concept for forming Nagaland Congress as regional political is to provide transparency in governance and accountability to the public and to give all round development and equal opportunities to the people of the state.
Rengma also asserted that NC will fully support the Indo- Naga peace process for early settlement which should be acceptable to all sections of the people.
“NC will respect the sentiment of every section of community and extend solidarity as and when needed” he added.
Earlier, NC treasurer Z Lohe, who also served as four times as an legislator to Nagaland Legislative Assembly, officially launched the party in presence of large party supporters and workers, stated that a new party in Nagaland is a must, at this critical juncture, adding that there is a mess in political system in Nagaland.
