Thomas Jones’ commemoration
SHILLONG: To commemorate the 175th anniversary of the coming of Rev.Thomas Jones to the Khasi Hills, the Department of Khasi, Synod College on Wednesday organised a special function in the campus. On the occasion, Rev. ES Langstieh hoisted the commemorative flag and delivered a special lecture on the contributions and sacrifices made by Rev. Thomas Jones for the upliftment of the Khasi society not just as a missionary but in the field of language and literature and in the socio-economic sphere as well.
Earlier in the day, the Department of English held a brief ceremony under the chairmanship of HoD, Prof. PG Marbaniang, who paid a glowing tribute to the “Father of the Khasi Alphabet”.
A special wreath was laid at the obelisk installed up in the campus, and a poem ‘Tribute to Thomas Jones’, written by Prof. I Pyngrope was read out.
The Department of English is also holding a week-long poster exhibition to highlight the life, work, and contribution of Thomas Jones.
World Music Day celebrated
SHILLONG: The students and faculty of the Department of Fine Arts, Martin Luther Christian University, on Tuesday joined the global celebration of music, the World Music Day.
Melodious performance in one of the most popular hangout joints of youngsters, Mellow Moods in Laitumkhrah marked the occasion. The stage was set with students performing various genres of music besides a special preview performance of their upcoming concert, “Ha Jylli ki Khriang”, which will be held on June 24 at Soso Tham Auditorium.
Ri Bhoi women achievers felicitated
SHILLONG: The office of the Deputy Commissioner, Ri Bhoi felicitated three “women achievers” from Ri Bhoi who have displayed acts of bravery at a programme held at District Auditorium Hall, Nongpoh on Tuesday.
Anjelica Tynsong, a brave heart girl from Pahamrioh village who had received the National Bravery Award for risking her life while saving her little brother when her house was gutted in fire, Dolyne Kharbhih the second woman from the state to scale Mount Everest and Plenty Makri of Thad Nongiaw village who was voted as one of 100 women achievers of India in the category of Commerce Industry and Entrepreneurship were felicitated during the programme which was organised under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme.
Hector Marwein, Additional Chief Secretary in charge Social Welfare department was the chief guest on the occasion.
Mementoes, certificates and cash prizes were handed over to the three achievers.
JCI head’s visit
SHILLONG: The National President of Junior Chamber International 2016 JCI Sen. Rajshree Bhaje visited Shillong on Wednesday. During her visit, she inaugurated a sanitary napkin destroying machine at Balika Hindi Vidyalaya Secondary School in the city. She also inaugurated another machine which will be installed at Pine Mount School, Shillong. During her stay at Shillong, she will be inaugurating a new chapter JCI Eagles.
On the morning of June 23 she will visit the place where 2016 saplings were planted by JCI Shillong Pine City under an initiative of ‘Give Back to Mother Earth’ during the World Environment Day at Lum Bangla, Smit.
WGH PHC doctor refutes allegations
SHILLONG: Dr Amin Nongrum of Jeldupara PHC in West Garo Hills has refuted allegations leveled against him by villagers. The doctor has been accused of demanding and collecting 50 per cent of the amount meant as honorarium for 14 ASHA workers for the distribution of mosquito nets under the NRHM scheme.
Rubbishing the allegations here on Wednesday, Dr. Nongrum asked the villagers to approach him directly to verify the facts. “The total amount of Rs 42,690 has already been disbursed to 14 ASHA workers in their respective savings bank accounts of which I have kept every single record to establish my claims and other related documents which will vindicate my innocence,” Dr Nongrum said in a statement. Furthermore, Dr Nongrum said that allegations that he stayed away from duty for long durations is not only ridiculous but also baseless.
