SHILLONG: As the Union government plans to provide electricity to all the un-electrified villages in the country, details have emerged of 812 un-electrified villages in Meghalaya.
As per the ‘Garv Dashboard’ not even a single village in the State is under the process of electrification.
However, 240 villages in the State are classified under the heading ‘energisation’ while 425 other villages that are to be electrified have been visited by concerned authorities.
The status of rural electrification in Meghalaya on the     ‘Garv Dashboard’ says that there are altogether 6459 inhabited villages in the State as per the 2011 Census.
Out of 912 villages in the State, 22 were electrified in 2016-17 and the balance of the villages as on May 31, 2016 which are to be electrified through grid is 677 villages while 212 others would be off-grid.
It also says that out of 4.22 lakh rural households, 1.94 lakh households are still to be electrified.
Going by the trends, it seems that the work of electrification of un-electrified villages is very slow in Meghalaya and only the time would tell if the government’s plans of providing power 24X7 to every house in the country by 2019 is achieved or not.
