GSU demands removal of non-tribal MDCs

SHILLONG: The Garo Students Union has demanded the ruling Garo Hills Progressive Alliance in Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), to remove two non-tribal MDCs who have been given portfolios in the district council.
GSU, additional general secretary Balrang Raka Ch. Momin condemned the move of the Garo Hills Progressive Alliance to give portfolios to S.G. Esmature Mominin of Shyamnagar constituency and Sofior Rahman of Balachanda, who were given the portfolios of Chairman, Planning, Sub-Committee and Chairman, Bakkijai, Sub-Committee respectively.
“Autonomous District Council exists for the interests of the tribal people, and for protection of our rights, culture, tradition, land and only the tribal should have the right to enjoy the benefits of Autonomous District council,” he said.
Stating that non-tribals should not be given the same right as the tribals in the Autonomous Councils since the District councils are under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, adding that only the tribal people should enjoy the rights given under Sixth Schedule.
