SHILLONG: The Supreme Court is likely to give a verdict on July 11 on the petition filed by a group from West Khasi Hills regarding the ownership of the 30 lakh of metric tonnes of coal lying in Meghalaya following the ban on rat hole mining by NGT.
NGT had asked the state government to auction the coal after the deadline for the transportation of extracted coal had expired.
The legal counsel for Meghalaya Government Ranjan Mukherjee said that the Supreme Court has also issued notice to All Dimasa Students since it was on their plea that coal mining was banned in Meghalaya.
He further said that the Supreme Court will take a final call with regards to the extension of payment of royalty and consequent transportation of coal.
A local NGO from Khasi Hills had challenged the decision of the National Green Tribunal as to how the coal which is the property of private individuals can be vested with the government.
