Nongpoh: Following the recent takeover of as many as 10 private weighbridges in the State by the Transport department due to the failure of the lessees to complete payment of all pending government dues, the Nongpoh Town Committee on Monday expressed strong opposition to the move for installation of a portable weighbridge at the DTO Office, Nongpoh, claiming that the area falls under the jurisdiction of the Nongpoh Town Committee.
The Nongpoh Town Committee, led by its Programme Development Secretary, Rayonald Kharkamni and Office Secretary, Plielad Tiewsoh, accompanied by the headman of Umlyngkdait, S. Kharkongor, on Monday visited the DTO office at Nongpoh and found that the Transport department had begun installing the portable weighbridge.
The committee sought a clarification from Additional Deputy Commissioner D. Phawa, who informed that it was being done by the Transport department.
Kharkamni opposed the installation of the weighbridge at Umlyngkdait alleging that it would obstruct smooth flow of traffic on the National Highway and cause obstruction to the general public, daily commuters and school children.
He further stated that permission had not been sought from the Dorbar Shnong for the weighbridge.
Among other reasons he stated was the possibility of nuisance and pollution in the surrounding area.
The PWD bridges constructed on both sides of the Transport office are weak and not meant for heavy vehicles; therefore, installation of this weighbridge will put the safety of public and vehicles at risk, Kharkamni added.
Kharkamni also mentioned that since Nongpoh does not have a proper parking lot, most vehicles are parked on the service road which creates traffic congestion and added that installation of this weighbridge will only add to the woes of the already congested Nongpoh Town.
Meanwhile, the Town Committee has decided to submit a memorandum to the Transport minister for intervention and clarification on the matter.
