City to observe Dalai Lama’s 81st birthday
SHILLONG: The Tibetan Settlement Office, the core group for Tibetan cause, would celebrate the 81st birthday of the Dalai Lama in the city on Wednesday.
Convener of the core group R.K. Khirmey said the celebrations would be held at the Aurobindo Ashram.
He said the celebration of the Dalai Lama’s birthday is to represent the importance of Tibet’s centuries   old ‘Guru – Chela’ (teacher – disciple) relationship with India.
Many cultural programmes will also be organized during the programme which would be attended by former chief minister D.D. Lapang.
Meanwhile, he said the public should be aware of the problems in Tibet.
“If anything happens in the international border with China, North East will be affected first,” he stated.

One dead in road mishap in State
SHILLONG: A motorcycle rider died on the spot after being hit by a bus (AS01 DD 1157) at Phramer, West Jaintia Hills on July 1. The victim has been identified as one Phrangki Tangliang (22). The bus driver fled after the incident.
In another case, one motorcycle (ML 05 M 6979) knocked down one Presila Diengdoh (68) at Nongrah Dongktieh, Shillong. Victim sustained injuries and was shifted to a hospital.
In another incident on the same day, one unknown vehicle knocked down Dorik R Marak (23) near Shillong civil hospital. Victim sustained injuries and was removed to the hospital for treatment.
Elsewhere, a driver of a Mahindra Bolero (ML11 1015) sustained injures when the vehicle was involved in a collision with a scooty (ML05 N 9157) at Sohryngkham under Mawryngkneng Block in East Khasi Hills on Monday afternoon.
Two persons – Present Bareh (33, M) and Daphi Passah (28, F) – sustained injuries when their Maruti Alto (ML05 L 5224) hit an auto carrier parked on the side of the road near ICAR on the Shillong Bypass at Pyllun under Umsning Block in Ri-Bhoi on Sunday afternoon. They were shifted to Woodland Hospital, Shillong.

Rally to protest crime against women
SHILLONG: A rally will be held in protest against the gruesome murder of Bliantina Lyngkhoi, and in opposition to violence against women in general at Mawlangsu area, Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills, on Wednesday.
The rally is a joint effort of Synjuk ki Seng Longkmie – Mawlangsu area, Nongstoin, Khasi Students’ Union of Mawthad Rat Shan Circle and North East Network – which will be held at Mawlangsu, Nongstoin, West Khasi Hills, on Wednesday.
Speakers for the gathering will include the acting Syiem of Hima Mariaw, members of Synjuk ki Rangbah Shnong; KSU Mawthad Rat Shan Circle president, chairperson of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women and counselor of One Stop Crisis Centre, Iohlynti.

Power tiller engine stolen from paddy field
Nongpoh: In one of the rarest case of its kind in Ri-Bhoi, the engine of a power tiller of a farmer at Mawtnum village kept at the paddy field was stolen by unknown miscreants.
The owner of the power tiller, J.W. Lapang, said miscreants took away only the engine and left the body of the power tiller at the paddy field. He said this might be the first such theft committed in Ri-Bhoi.
Lapang asked other owners/ farmers to be aware of this kind of theft and take precautionary measures to ensure that their machineries are kept in the safe place.
An FIR in this regard has been lodged with Nongpoh Police.

Car lifters active in State, 2 vehicles stolen
SHILLONG: Car lifters are still active in the State with no end in sight to their nefarious activities.
On the morning of July 3, unknown miscreants stole one Maruti Swift Dzire (AS01 AY 8301) belonging to Robert Lyngdoh from Lower Lachumiere, Shillong.
The same night, around 10:30 PM, unknown miscreants stole one Maruti car (ML05 K 9443) from Nongmensong Langkyrding, Shillong.

Theft cases reported in State
SHILLONG: On July  1 evening, unknown miscreants broke into the residence of one Debajit Kumar Dutta at Lower Motinagar, Shillong and stole one laptop, cash Rs. 5,300 and other valuable items.
On July  1 early morning, unknown miscreants broke into the shop of Rajiv Kumar at Lad Kynrooh, Sohphlang, Jowai and stole electronic items valued around Rs. 2,03,707.
