SHILLONG: In a refreshing reversal, the driver of a local taxi deposited a purse containing mobile phone, ATM and cash which was found in the taxi after dropping tourists on Wednesday, to the nearest police station.
At a time when whatever is lost is never returned to the owner, the taxi driver has set an example for others to emulate.
A police official said that the a tourist from Guwahati, identified as Madhurjya Phukon and his family booked the local taxi ( ML 05 L 6206) for local sightseeing on Wednesday and in the evening after completing their trip they were dropped at Raj Bhavan point where they kept their private vehicle.
After getting down from the local taxi, they found that they forgot to take one lady’s purse containing mobile phone,ATM and cash from the taxi.
They later came to Sadar Police Station for filing an FIR.
The officers at Sadar Police Station immediately swung into action and tried to ring up the lost mobile phone, but since the phone was in busy mode, the location was not traceable.
However, later the contact was made and the driver of the local taxi identified himself as Sanjeev Sen, a resident of Pynthorbah Block- II informed that he had deposited the purse containing cash, mobile phone and some important documents at Pasteur Beat House.
The officers of Sadar PS contacted Pasteur Beat House and after confirmation, police personnel were deputed to escort the tourist to the Beat House to receive his belongings.. On his return to Sadar PS, the complainant, an Advocate by profession based in Guwhati appreciated the efforts of the police personnel for their promptness and stated that the help from the police was exceptional compared to his home state.
The officer in charge at Sadar PS said that he would urge all local and tourist taxi drivers to learn from the example set by the local taxi driver who without showing any greed handed over the belongings to the police for safe custody so that the tourists visiting the state will go back with positive memories.
