SHILLONG: The official launch function of North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) will be held in Guwahati on Wednesday in the presence of BJP president Amit Shah and other senior central ministers.
Soon after the BJP victory in the Assam assembly polls, NEDA was formed on May 24 initiated by BJP and supported by non Congress political parties including regional outfits in line with the coalition of BJP led NDA.
Though the ultimate goal of forming NEDA is to free the North East from the Congress and to ensure victory of non Congress political parties in the upcoming Assembly polls and the next Lok Sabha elections by forming coalitions, many development initiatives have been planned by NEDA for the North East, sources said.
After the formation of NEDA, the first meeting was held on June 22 in Guwahati and during the official launch of NEDA on Wednesday, the agenda of action plan will be fixed, sources added.
Besides non Congress political parties from the North East, representatives of Mizo National Front, Peoples’ Party of Arunachal, Asom Gana Parishad, Bodoland People’s Front and Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura and the UDP and NPP from Meghalaya had also attended the first meeting of NEDA convened by BJP leader and Assam cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Both NPP and UDP are expected to take part in the official launch of NEDA in Guwahati which will also be attended by senior central ministers, the chief ministers of Assam, Nagaland, Arunachal and Sikkim and MPs of non-Congress rules states among others.
NPP national president and Tura MP Conrad Sangma said compared to the past forums which had connected political parties in the North East, NEDA will be different as there are strong and committed political parties in the new forum.
“We expect a good show and announcement of an action plan or road map for the development of the North East during the launch,” Sangma said.
