ATMs to come under remote surveillance

SHILLONG:  Cases of lifting and stealing of ATMs is increasing in the city which has the highest availability of ATMS in the country, SBI chief General Manger, North East circle, PVSNL Murthy said on Sunday.
Murthy said that the percentage of SBI ATM in Shillong is 78 percent which is highest in the country. Reacting to a query, he said that the SBI would soon introduce remote surveillance facility in the ATMs which would reduce ATMs theft, adding that the new facility will send video footage to the bank authorities if any one tries to open or lift the ATM machine.
“We will soon introduce the system in 300-400 ATMs across the region,” he said. He also said that the Bank is intentionally not keeping security guards in the ATMs since it is very expensive.
He also claimed that the cases of stealing of ATM machines  of the machine in the ground.
Last year, miscreants had stolen Rs 20 lakh from an ATM and also looted Rs 21,28,000 from an ATM machine at Banalari Petrol Pump, Mawlai though they were caught by public. Also, an ATM machine at Madanriting was robbed of more than Rs 14 lakh, last year.
