SHILLONG: Parliamentary Secretary for Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Kennedy C Khyriem on Saturday made an ardent appeal to the people of the state to ensure that all the animals including pets are well treated and taken care of and also cautioned that violation of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act entails fine and imprisonment.
Speaking as the chief guest at a workshop organized by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, Government of Meghalaya under the theme, “Concept of Animal Welfare”, at Moreau Institute of Integral Training, Dhanketi, Khyriem said that animals too have the right to live comfortably, be well fed, kept free from diseases and pain and have access to free movement.
He added that animal abuses include inflicting pain and hunger.
Khyriem also said that he has come to know about a now defunct animal welfare association in the city and suggested that it should be revived for ensuring better treatment to animals.
