New Delhi: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has claimed that the law and order situation in Meghalaya is by and large peaceful barring in some parts of Garo Hills and Khasi Hills district.

Speaking at the 11th meeting of the Inter-State Council at Rashtrapati Bhawan here on Saturday, the cooperation extended by ULFA and NDFB to GNLA has complicated the situation and the Garo rebel outfit has been indulging in extortionskidnappings for ransom, murder, and attack on security forces.

The Chief Minister reiterated that law and order is a state subject and this should continue to be so.

Sangma said that the state had proposed to launch commando battalion and two reserve battalions as a special anti- insurgency force.  “The Central Government should provide a one-time assistance to the states to raise such commando units,” he quipped.
