Guwahati: The Army and Assam police in a joint operation on Sunday wee hours killed three hardcore terrorists from National Democratic Front Bodolaond (Songbijit faction) in Kokrajhar district of western Assam.
A defence spokesman informed that based on specific intelligence, a joint team of Army and police personnel i launched a series of joint operations with Kokrajhar district against the NDFB(S) insurgents.
During the course of one such operation, the troops noticed suspected persons moving through a dense jungle. On being challenged these persons opened indiscriminate fire on the troops. The Army team retaliated with controlled fire and in the ensuing fire fight, three top terrorists of the outlawed NDFB(S) were killed. Two of the killed terrorists were identified as Rahul Basumatari and Ritu Basumatari.
Four pistols, a large quantity of ammunition, hand grenades and other war like stores were recovered from the slain terrorists. The killing of these terrorists has come as a major setback for the militant group which has already been reeling under the pressure due to the relentless counter-insurgency operations launched against them by the Army in conjunction with other security forces.
The surgical operation carried out under the prevailing torrential rains, in thick foliage and under growth of the Assam jungles is highly commendable and a hallmark of the Army’s dedicated efforts to usher in peace in the region, the Defence spokesman said.
