NONGSTOIN: Despite repeated advisories, people’s inclination to secure a public sector job without going through the supposedly strenuous process has cost many dearly in the past. In yet another similar incident of a much bigger magnitude, as many as 450 youths from Mairang were duped of over Rs 2 crore by a female imposter posing as a sub inspector of Meghalaya Police.
The accused, Evangeline Kharbuli (39) posed as a messiah for candidates from humble backgrounds looking for jobs in the government sector. By claiming that she has been helping unemployed youths all along, assisting them in securing jobs as Home Guards, peons, chowkidars and LDAs, Kharbuli collected Rs 2,00,25000 from the unsuspecting victims.
Kharbuli was arrested from her residence at Mawlai Kyntonmassar on July 14.
Addressing media persons here on Tuesday West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, S. Nongtnger said that Kharbuli started offering fake jobs from September 2015 when she met one S L Mawlong of langtor village at Mawdiangdiang, East Khasi Hills.
The con woman impressed upon Mawlong that she helps people especially from rural background to secure a job on payment of Rs.50,000.
Mawlong, it has been learnt, was instrumental in spreading the news over Mairang thus leading to victimization of the youths.
Nongstnger informed that Kharbuli used to come in police uniform to collect the cash from every village.
However, when the youths did not receive any appointment or call letters months after paying the money, they questioned Mawlong who publicized the entire matter. Mawlong in turn filed an FIR at Mairang Police Station in this regard and subsequently police arrested the accused from her residence at Mawlai Kyntonmassar on July 14.
Following the arrest the cops recovered a number of job applications, a maruti van, a scooty and a police uniform.
Meanwhile, Nongtnger urged the youths of the district not to fall prey to such fraudsters.
