Estimates Committee member Jemino Mawthoh slams tardy implementation of NFSA

SHILLONG: Nothing is being done at the policy level to tackle the issue of urban congestion in the State. Stating this in a press conference here on Wednesday, after meeting officials of the Urban Affairs department, UDP leader and member of the Estimates Committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Jemino Mawhtoh said that different departments of the State Government have to make a concerted effort to tackle the issue of urban congestion.
The Urban Affairs officials were summoned by the Committee for a meeting.
Mawthoh observed that traffic snarls will increase the blood pressure levels of the urban populace who are also battling with urban congestion
“As of now, nothing is being done on the policy level to address the issue and we have taken serious note of it. The coordination of various departments of the government-Urban Affairs, Home, Traffic and PWD (is required), to address the issue,” Mawthoh said adding that a lot of complaints have been received from people on the issue.
It may be mentioned that urban planning has been at best lacking in Shillong and other parts of the State adding to traffic woes among others.

The Committee also took into account the tardy implementation of the National Food Security Act (NFSA).
“We have been hearing complaints about names not being enrolled and people not getting ration cards etc,” Mawthoh said.
The UDP leader stated that the anomalies should be rectified as soon as possible to enable people, especially those from the vulnerable sections, to avail the benefits of the noble scheme.
