GSU opposes uranium mining

SHILLONG: The Garo Students’ Union (Khasi Hills Zone) opposed the uranium mining and demanded for a full closure of the proposed mining of the mineral at the same time stating that the Central and State Government should put an end to the uranium mining policy in the state.
In a statement issued here, Saljrang Momin, president KSU (KHZ) expressed concern on the health risks of uranium mining, adding that people living near the mines are at higher risk and stated that diseases ranging from lung cancer, leukaemia, stomach cancer and birth defects are associated with uranium mining.
