SHILLONG: An organization called the Poor People Movement (PPM) has urged the State government not to grant ST status to children born of tribal woman who marry a non-tribal.
In an awareness meeting attended by HYC, HANM, HUAM among others at Motphran on Friday, KHNAM MDC Adelbert Nongrum spoke on the issue which according to him was posing a grave threat to the future of the indigenous community.
“The community is facing a dilemma with illegal immigration being the main threat. The migrants have the perception that girls are the inheritors of property and target to marry them,” he said.
PPM president, Louis Dohtdong said that the organization aims to create awareness about the ills of inter-community marriages.
