SHILLONG: Calls for more women in the police force have been ringing around the corridors of power for a long time.
A similar recommendation was made during a consultation programme between Meghalaya police and citizens held in the city on Saturday.
In the programme — tiled “Building Bridges”, recommendations were also made to make police stations more clean and welcoming as it would encourage public to approach police seeking help.
Speaking on the occasion, Home Minister Roshan Warjri asserted that the Government was doing its best to take care of the needs and requirements of the department.
She also said that inculcation of positive values by the department  should be encouraged through counseling and training, adding that the Government is taking steps to improve living condition of the police personnel.
On the other hand, Meghalaya DGP SK Jain said that police department is in its evolving role through the years and how it has been transformed from an organization of force into the one that is focused on service.
The programme was attended by school students, police officers, NGOs, teachers, lawyers and citizens.
The deliberations sought to bring an improvement in police-people relationships.
