TURA: Hotels in Tura town could soon run out of business and face a lock down after the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board passed an order recently seeking their closure for violation of environmental norms.
The MSPCB has passed an order seeking the closure of all private hotels in Tura since they have allegedly been found responsible for emissions of environment pollution.
Many of these hotels have allegedly been dumping their waste products into nearby streams leading to pollution of the water. It was also found that none of the hotels have installed any anti-pollution equipment to check or control discharge of waste into natural water bodies.
The Board has decided to act since none of the private hotels have obtained the required No Objection Certificate (NOC) despite being provided with a show cause notice. Some of the premier hotels of the town that could face action from the board are likely to be Hotel Rikman, Hotel Sundare, Hotel Natraj, Hotel Rajkamal and other smaller lodges that dot the Tura market area.
