SHILLONG: The Expression of Interest (EoI) for finalizing the structural design of the new Meghalaya Legislative Assembly complex is in its final stage.
Assembly Speaker A.T. Mondal said on Thursday that the EoI is almost ready and it will be floated nationally to ensure that there is wider participation to provide better designs for construction of the Assembly.
After the heritage Assembly building was gutted in a fire on January 9, 2001, there were several efforts to find a suitable site to construct the new Assembly but the same has been pending for more than 15 years now.
The Speaker, however, mentioned that after the identification of a suitable plot of land at Mawdiangdiang, on the outskirts of Shillong, the Assembly Secretariat has taken initiative to construct the new Assembly.
“We are moving on the right track and we will construct the Assembly phase wise as the immediate attention will be on construction of the Assembly Chamber, Secretary and others,” the Speaker added.
