TURA: Two teenage sisters who went to have bath in River Simsang were washed away by the strong water current on Saturday afternoon.
The duo, identified as Siljring R Marak (13) and Bijimesa R Marak (15), were students of Greenhill Secondary School in Williamnagar. They went to Chibok Dengreng Wari (lake) at Nengmandalgre on the outskirts of the town to take bath.
The elder sister was the first to get pulled away by the strong current and hearing her cries, the younger one jumped into the water but also drowned. The body of Bijimesa was found after search. However, the body of the other girl was not found till the filing of the report.
The girls had taken part in the school’s social work programme and cleaning drive at a children’s park in Williamnagar on Saturday.
The water current in the Simsang and its tributaries have been extremely strong since Friday night’s heavy rain in East Garo Hills.
