Imphal: Police and paramilitary personnel on Monday foiled multi-pronged attempts by protesters to storm the Manipur assembly on the last day of its monsoon session, leaving several people injured.
At least two elderly persons were taken to hospital and several people were hurt as security forces fired tear gas.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) had announced separate plans to storm the assembly.
The district magistrates of both Imphal West and Imphal East districts clamped curfew within a one kilometre radius of the assembly from Sunday midnight.
Heavily armed personnel in riot gear were deployed in and around the house.
The JCILPS wants an anti-migrant bill. The BJP wants the cancellation of the recruitment tests for police constables.
BJP workers led by state unit president Khetrimayum Bhabananda tried to storm the assembly from one side.
Another group marched from the western side. A third group came from the eastern side.
The protesters shouted slogans against the “corrupt Congress government”. (IANS)
