Editor,
I fully endorse the PIL filed by Mr. Sajay Laloo regarding the order issued by the Meghalaya High Court to provide Z-plus security to the court’s serving and retired chief justices and judges and that they are also to be treated like “state guests”. As Mr. Laloo states, on what grounds and reasons should the two, Chief Justice Uma Nath Singh and Judge TNK Singh themselves asses any threat that may come their way and that too at the cost of the state exchequer? What on earth could the two possibly be so afraid of that they wish to shield themselves snugly at any cost? While it may be accepted that serving chief justice may be provided Z-plus security after being duly assessed, after retirement they are plain ordinary individuals like anyone else. They must understand that. I’m sure any sane individual in the right frame of mind would actually feel that way. Well, now that the State Government will be filing a Special Leave Petition (SLP) challenging the order of the High Court of Meghalaya let us only be hopeful that the effort initiated by Mr. Laloo will not go to waste and justice prevails.

Well done Mawhati villagers
Editor,
The People from Mawhati village and its periphery ought to be congratulated for jointly raising the social problem of road communication of the people of Mawhati, part of Umsning, Umroi and Nongpoh constituencies before Meghalaya Government. We would love to see that people of other parts of Meghalaya will also emulate their example to put pressure on the stubborn and mute Meghalaya MUA Government to be up and doing to address to various social, educational, economic, political or other issues of the society. It is a fact that the condition of the 83 km Umsning-MawhatiMawïong-Jagi Road is one of the worst condition roads in Meghalaya. Having travelled through this long back breaking road, I fully know that this road is without any maintenance for last many years. Villagers from Mawhati, Umsning, Nongpoh and Umroi constituencies are facing indescribable problems every day due to the condition of this road. The PWD at Umsning Division does not care about this communication problem raised by the people from time to time. The former MLAs, P.W. Muktieh, Donbok Khymndeit and the present MLA of Mawhati constituency, Mr. Julius Dorphang, are not effective at all to deal with this problem. In fact, a joint Memorandum was already submitted by the people residing all along this road to Mr. H.D.R Lyngdoh in 2012 when he was PWD Minister. The Memorandum has requested the PWD Minister to convert this strategic road into a two lane as this is an inter-state connectivity and also a short cut to reach Upper and Eastern Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur from Meghalaya. Since then, nothing was done in this regard. Today, this road is left totally unattended by PWD of Meghalaya Government. We strongly urge Mr. Martin Danggo, the newly sworn in PWD Minister and the government of Dr. Mukul Sangma, to immediately take up construction of this vital inter-state strategic two lane road not only to mitigate the sufferings of the affected people of the above mentioned areas, but also, to cut distances and travel time of commuters travelling from Meghalaya to Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Manipur.
Yours etc.,
Philip Marweiñ,
