SHILLONG: Chief Secretary, K.S. Kropha was inducted as the new president of the Meghalaya Bharat Scouts and Guides on Wednesday. The ceremony was held at the Durbar Hall of Raj Bhavan.
Kropha has been inducted as president Meghalaya Bharat Scouts and Guides by virtue of his post and the Governor is the Patron of the Movement in the State.
Speaking at the gathering, Kropha said, “In a society where we live today our value systems are eroding but I am glad to know that the Meghalaya Bharat Scouts and Guides upholds basic human values which are common to all.”
“The principle value is to be truthful to God, society and to ourselves. We are blessed with a conscience as it will never mislead us. We must learn  to be truthful and to be guided by the inner voice and not by external considerations,” he said.
Meanwhile, Governor V. Shanmuganathan urged the Meghalaya Bharat Scouts and Guides to adopt a village. “Life in villages is hard and they do not have the habit to go to the doctor. There is an increase in infant mortality ratio (IMR) and maternal mortality rate (MMR). It is better to adopt a village so as to minimise the problems in rural areas,” he said.
The Governor threw a challenge to the enthusiastic gathering of scouts and guides to bring laurels to Meghalaya by achieving a medal in national/international events, as he perceived that it is possible in the long run.
The Governor gave away prizes to winners of the essay writing competition on the topic, ‘Three Heroes of the State- U Tirot Sing Syiem, U Kiang Nangbah and Pa Togan Sangma. It may be noted that the competition was initiated by the Governor for the students to be aware of the heroes of the state.
The winners were Larisa Blah, Umpling Presbyterian Secondary School, Kimkime R. Sangma, Seven Set Higher Secondary School and Saphi Badondor W. Makdoh, Church of God.
