Five attempted gang rape; grandfather raped minor regularly
TURA: A village defence party has saved a girl from the clutches of five men who were trying to gang-rape her.
The girl from a village near Dalu in Assam met a man whom she knew from a telephone conversation, outside Garobadha town a few days ago. The man, along with his four friends, took the girl to Kalapani village near Hallidayganj on the Assam side of the border and tried to rape her.
The girl’s cries alerted members of the defence party of a nearby village who came to the spot and caught the five men – identified as Monirul Islam of Kumarghati, Jahangir Alam of Kharuabanda, Hasidul Alam of Bhangtimati, Md Pasham Ali and Abdullah Sheikh, both hailing from Chattibui village – and handed them to Assam police. The accused are at present in the custody of Garo Hills police.
In another incident in North Garo Hills district, police arrested a 42-year-old man for allegedly sexually abusing his seven-year-old granddaughter.
The accused, Lalitson Ch Marak, was handed over to police by members of a students’ body, All A’chik Youth Federation, who were alerted by the clan members of the girl’s late mother. The child’s grandparents were looking after her after her mother passed away.
The accused, who was reportedly an alcoholic, allegedly raped her whenever the grandmother was out. He has been remanded to judicial custody and the girl has been sent to a shelter home.
