SHILLONG: The Opposition on Thursday attacked the State government for passing the Prevention of Disqualification (Members of the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya) Amendment Bill, 2015, “which ended in an embarrassment for it”.
Leader of the Opposition Donkupar Roy said so many MLAs and MDCs resigned after the Bill was passed as they feared that they would be disqualified if they didn’t resign.
Roy said all the MDCs who resigned from the post of MDC should ask for compensation.
“PN Syiem is a hero who was not bothered about disqualification,” Roy added.
Daddengre MLA James Sangma said the Act was a deliberate attempt to destroy the career of a few people but it became an embarrassment for the government.
Later, Ardent Basaiawmoit attacked District Council Affairs Minister Prestone Tynsong over the matter saying the Minister considers the dual posts bill valid but at the same time says the MLAs who resigned from the post can contest the bye-poll.
“The Minister is saying one thing inside the House and another outside the Assembly,” he said.
However, Tynsong clarified that he had said any MDC who wanted to contest the bye-poll can go ahead on their own.
