NONGPOH: Members of the Khasi Students’ Union, ‘North Khasi Hills’ unit on Thursday barged into the Aadhaar Enrolment Cell of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Nongpoh and disrupted the proceedings.
The KSU members led by their local unit general secretary Lambok Rymbai demanded the DC’s Research Officer, Planning Department to immediately stop all activities relating to Aadhaar enrolment citing that it will allow “illegal immigrants” to easily register their names and pave way for unabated influx in the state. The enrolment process which had to be stopped for a while was however resumed when the union’s members left the spot.
Speaking to media persons Rymbai alleged that the Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner did not pay heed to the demand of the union on Aadhaar enrolment and failed to take into account the outcome of talks held earlier between various stakeholders and the then Additional Deputy Commissioner PS Kharkongor. “All this prompted the union to disrupt the ongoing enrolment process,” he said.
However, Deputy Commissioner, CP Gotmare said that Aadhaar enrolment cannot be stopped as it has been resumed following a direction from the state government. He informed that the process was put on hold in the past due to some issues with the vendor entrusted with it.
Stating that the passage of the Money Bill, also known as the Aadhaar Bill, by the Centre made enrolment compulsory, Gotmare warned the KSU of legal action if they continue to disrupt the enrolment process.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner will meet the KSU leaders on September 19 to deliberate on the issue.
