JOWAI: The year-long Golden Jubilee celebration of Kiang Nangbah Government College, Jowai began here on Saturday where students of the only government college in Jaintia Hills will celebrate the jubilee under the theme, ‘Dream, believe and achieve’.
Deputy Chief Minister, RC Laloo graced the inaugural function as the chief guest in the presence of the Director of Higher & Technical Education, Ram Singh who was the guest of honour besides others including ex-principals of the college, teachers, professors, government officials, students and alumni members.
Speaking on the occasion, Laloo who is an ex-student of the college expressed his joy to be a part of its 50 years jubilee celebration. “In its 50 years journey, the college has produced notable persons in the state and I am very happy to be here to celebrate the jubilee”, RC Laloo said.
While congratulating the college for its achievements, Ram Singh insisted that there is a need to grow with the change of time and to start introducing different courses beside the current ones so as to develop the standard of the college. This he said, will help students get work in private sectors as jobs in government sectors are getting saturated.
President of the alumni association, BN Lamare, who is also the former Principal of Kiang Nangbah College, encouraged the students to make use of the various facilities available in the college. ”The aim of the alumni is to uplift the educational standard of the college and to cater to the needs of the students”, Lamare said while appealed to all alumni of the college to enroll themselves so that they can help in the development of the college.
Earlier known as Jowai Government College, Kiang Nangbah Government College, Jowai was established in the year 1967 starting with a team of only 7 teachers and 6 departments. Currently, the strength of the teachers in the college has gone up to 97 with 15 departments of arts, science and commerce. Till date, twenty principals had served the college and molded it into what it is now.
Being the only college in Jaintia Hills to offer degree course in science, over 4000 students are currently enrolled in the college.
